Baptism
If you are exploring baptism, we would love to support you on the journey. Please contact the Office on 01582 454081 in the first instance. If you don’t live in our parish, there are a few extra steps we will need to discuss with you, but we will guide you through these. Baptisms usually take place in our main Sunday service.
Baptism is an important part of the Christian journey. As a child, you are baptised into the family of God and parents and godparents make the declarations of faith on behalf of the child(ren). As part of the service, parents and godparents declare the Christian faith and make promises in front of the whole church family and God that they will raise the child to know God. The church will offer support in raising the child(ren) and we encourage families to join in with our family activities (family church and children’s church).
If baptism doesn’t feel right for your child(ren) and you would prefer them to make their own decision when they are old enough, we can offer a dedication or thanksgiving service. The Vicar will guide you through what would be included in the service.
Baptism as an adult is an important milestone in any person’s journey. As an adult, you make your own declarations about the Christian faith and God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. If you come to know the Lord, the next step is a public declaration of that which is what baptism as an adult is all about. You may like to share your testimony during the service. As an adult, we can offer baptism by full immersion. Please discuss with the Vicar if this is something you might be interested in.
As Christians, once you have been baptised, you can’t be baptised again. If you would like to reaffirm your baptism vows, we can help with that and this can also be done by full immersion if you wish. Again, please speak to the Vicar who will guide you through.
As a Church of England church we also believe that confirmation is an important step along the Christian journey. For those baptised as children, confirmation is the opportunity to publically declare your own faith and the Bishop will lay his hands on you and pray a special prayer. If you are baptised as an adult, confirmation will usually take place fairly soon afterwards.
